Te Wāhanga Tuatahi / Section One – Online Pre-work
This paper has 5 goals. Te Wahanga Tuatahi sets the course expectations and will give an insight into the work of Mana Ririki. The objectives of section one is to bring the group together, introduce traditional Māori Parenting and gain commitment of whānau with children to this programme.
Tikanga Ririki was developed by the Te Kāhui Mana Ririki Charitable Trust (operating as Mana Ririki) after its establishment in 2007. The repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act created national debate in NZ about child abuse. The outpour of public grief that followed the death of three-year-old Nia Glassie focused the nation’s attention on Māori child abuse in particular. The waiata “Nia” by Maisie Rika marks this event.
The Trust was formed as the result of a three-day Māori Child Abuse Summit of providers called in response to these events. The goal of Te Kāhui Mana Ririki Trust is to eliminate Māori child abuse.
